Unsightly Veins Q & A
What are unsightly veins?
Unsightly veins are blood vessels that show through your skin as red, blue, or purple lines or protrude from the skin. Some, like varicose veins, do both.
Common types of unsightly veins Dr. Landau can treat at Vein Care Medical Center include:
- Telangiectasia (spider veins)
- Leg veins
- Facial veins (red and blue)
- Venous lake (purple lesions on lips)
- Reticular veins
- Hand veins
When you visit Vein Care Medical Center, Dr. Landau can diagnose the type of unsightly veins you have and recommend the most appropriate treatment.
What causes unsightly veins?
There are several reasons why you might develop unsightly veins. In larger veins, venous insufficiency is the most common cause. This is a condition that develops as the valves that direct the flow of blood in your veins stop working as well as they used to.
As a result, blood isn’t getting to your heart efficiently and starts flowing the wrong way. The pooling blood causes varicose veins that show through your skin and begin to bulge.
Smaller unsightly veins like spider veins and venous lakes or phlebectasis on your lips are likely to be due to overexposure to the sun or extremes of heat and cold. Genetic factors could also be involved.
How are unsightly veins treated?
At Vein Care Medical Center, Dr. Landau can treat most unsightly veins using the Cutera® Excel V™ laser or sclerotherapy.
The Cutera® Excel V™ laser is a cutting-edge technology that uses a special high-powered laser to treat visible vessels and blemishes with precision. During treatment, your blood vessels absorb the laser light within the dermis (skin). This causes the veins to coagulate, and then your body gradually reabsorbs them through its own natural processes.
Alternative treatments for some types of unsightly veins include direct-vision sclerotherapy for treating reticular veins and smaller varicose veins. Foam sclerotherapy is suitable for treating larger varicose veins and is suitable for use on hand veins.
Unsightly veins might be causing distress because of the way they look, or you might be experiencing other unpleasant symptoms. Treatment can be swift and painless, with fast results and little to no downtime.
